Michelle Weinberg responds to Downtown Hollywood’s Deco-inspired storefronts and the typography of store signs with Oasis in Progress. Her plan for The Great Southern Hotel presents a new scenario for the building’s aesthetics, while still connecting to the community. It reflects Weinberg’s signature style of incorporating bold colors and shapes, using geometric patterns that “dance around” the building’s exterior. Visitors can decide whether the title, Oasis in Progress, refers to the setting under construction or to a peaceful getaway in the present moment. “Painting on an existing building with its indications of scale, function and architectural details, provides more than a blank backdrop,” said Weinberg. “I want to create a new narrative for The Great Southern Hotel that brings softness and humor to the streetscape.” Weinberg is widely acclaimed in the realm of public art, and her participation in DHMP is one of two major artistic contributions she is making to revitalize the area this year. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood announced that Weinberg was selected for its local sidewalk art project, which is funded with a $100,000 grant from The Community Foundation of Broward’s Art of Community program and a matching contribution from the City of Hollywood.
